In 1886, the art dealer Durand-Ruel exhibited 32 of
Renoir's paintings in New York, thus opening the American market for
Impressionism. The evidence of Renoir’s (and other Impressionists’) success in
the USA is a great number of their pictures in American museums. In December
1888, Renoir suffered the first attacks of arthritis, which would cripple his
hands; in 1898 after a serious attack of the disease his right arm was
paralyzed. From now on he painted, overcoming strong pains, strapping a brush to
his wrist.
Renoir died in Cagnes on 3 December 1919 and was buried in Essoyes,
next to Aline.

In 1976, protesting the taxes his heirs would owe
on the value of his paintings upon his demise.
Ted DeGrazia took his images of the people of the southwest out to the desert and burned them.
Although Americans appreciate art, nothing says "American Legend" like a tax protest.
The story of Ted DeGrazia, artist, sought by the IRS when they determined his paintings were so
valuable that he should pay thousands of dollars in taxes on them - the story where he burns all his
paintings and asks the IRS "Ok, now what are they worth?" - that alone is worth the visit to the
former studio of this oh-so-Tucson artist.

handbags from the '40s and '50s have become the hottest trend among collectors
and fashion mavens alike. Asking $300.00
Shiny totes bought for $5 to $50 is selling for a whopping $150 to $500 today. East Coast boutiques have been
known to charge $2,000 for a classic bag!
Friend’s cutie Lisa Kudrow put the celebrity stamp of approval on the trend when she was photographed with
a vintage American-made purse she picked up in Paris. "These are objects of style, not outdated fashion accessories,"
says Robert Gottlieb, one of the three men behind the book A Certain Style: The Art Of The Plastic Handbag, 1949 1959
(Alfred A. Knopf Inc.). Revolutionary early plastics like Bakelite let designers use both wild color schemes - like marble
and tortoise shell and fun shapes, including boxes, cylinders and trapezoids, beehives and picnic baskets. As finishing
touches, many hand bags sported decorations like shells, pearls, flowers, rhinestones, laminated lace and metal filigree.
The purses were considered wearable art until cheap
vinyl knockoffs made plastic passe, say experts.
The Kent State University Museum in Ohio displayed about 20 old-time plastic purses. "They do have a sculptural quality,"
says Anne Bissonnette, the museum's curator. "The material was very new at the time, so people were attracted to the
novelty, and Bakelite has allure because of the colors." Janice Berkson makes a pretty penny reselling plastic purses at
her New York City store. “Deco Jewels.” "Plastic purses were made to be used," says Berkson. "I carry one every day,
because when you walk into a room with one of these, it's a conversation starter."
